Sponsored by aircraft manufacturer, Rene Caudron, and some rich, French aviation enthusiasts, the Caudron C.450 and C.460 were designed specifically to race in Europe's Coupe Deutsch de la Meurthe race of 1934. The full scale Caudron C.450 was built in 1934 for France's prestigious 2000km air race, the Coupe Deutsch de la Meurthe, which it won with an average speed of 241.7 mph. In its day, the Caudron C.450 was the fastest plane in the world, with speeds of 268 and 244 mph across distances of 100 and 1000 km respectively, as noted on the starboard.

The little Caudrons were highly succesful racing planes: in the 1934 Coupe de la Meurthe the C.450 took first place, piloted by Maurice Arnoux, and one of the C.460s took third, piloted by Albert Monville.

This Caudron C450 is one version of a series of racing aircraft from the early 1930s (C 362, C366, C450, C460, C461), the latter having retractable undercarriage. There are a couple of flying replicas of the later versions, q.v. They were quite successful and set many speed records.
